People: Children (AMATEUR) - HONORABLE MENTION
When school lets out, she will have to go home.

This was taken in Johannesburg, Africa (2014) when I was conducting Well-Care visits and Health education. I was fortunate enough to catch this moment as school was letting out. This young girl was staring, biting the inside of her lip, concentrating so hard I believed she was solving a difficult math equation or forming an opinion on Shakespeare. Some educated thought that lent itself to her school uniform and mature appearance. Out of frame, to the left, kids were anxious to end another school day. Her attention was on a wide dirt road that snaked between tall grass before narrowing into the horizon. I was told her house lay at the end of that road. She stood like that for a long while before slowly beginning her journey home. When I look at this photograph I worry because either something along the way home, or maybe home itself, she had an issue with but I don’t know what that issue was.
I am a nurse who volunteers a lot. I hope one day to make traveling and providing aid, a career.
